Läste i NYR Daily¹ om Ritwik Ghatak, en bengalisk filmskapare jag inte hört talas om tidigare. Artikelförfattaren kontrasterar honom mot Satyajit Ray och dennes “glowing Apu Trilogy” eftersom han anser Ghatak betydligt mer svartsynt.

Sången Akash Bhora Surjo Tara är från Ritwik Ghataks film Komal Gandhar från 1961 och jag fick kännedom om den genom en intervju med Amit Chaudhuri där han på frågan om vilket bok som senast fick honom att gråta svarar:

I don’t know if this counts, but that whole sequence in Ritwik Ghatak’s film Komal Gandhar, in which a character is singing “akash bhara surja tara” (“the sky full of stars and sun, / the world full of life”), brought tears to my eyes.

Debabrata Biswas är den egentliga sångaren och naturligtvis tillhör den Rabindra Sangeet.

Urvashi Butalia skriver i Granta om hijiran Mona som, om jag minns rätt, också utgör en av huvudpersonerna i Arundhati Roys nya roman:

These were Mona’s friends and neighbours, some of whom lived in the old city of Delhi nearby. Mona talked to everyone. Speaking to the men she became, or assumed, the male persona of Ahmed-bhai, and many of the men present addressed her as such. Speaking with the women she was Mona, or baji, or behen – all female terms. This quick switch from one identity to the other, and the ease with which she achieved this, was remarkable. Now she was Ahmed and now baji or Mona, and no one seemed to find this odd.

For the work Will They Sing Like Raindrops or Leave Me Thirsty, Max Pinckers (born in Belgium in 1988, but raised in Asia), travelled to India for four months, accompanied by his partner Victoria Gonzalez-Figueras. There he has attempted to document, capture, stage and bring to life various specific aspects of love and marriage. Searching through newspapers and magazines, watching films and roaming through cities, he has been looking for subjects that suited his theme, such as couples on their honeymoon at the foot of the Himalayas, men on white horses, Victoria’s (carts on which newlyweds strut around), photo studios where couples have their portraits taken, strange decors for marriage ceremonies, a stranded photograph of a married couple (which is offered to a river, lake or sea after their death), a set of discarded photos from a studio next to the Taj Mahal and many other things. He also made pictures of ‘lovebirds’ (young lovers on the run from their disapproving families due to caste or religious differences) and the Love Commandos (an organization that protects and supports these young runaway couples and helps them get married and start anew).
