Don Cherrys lätthet

Sonny Rollins (i en intervju med Adam Shatz): “Don liked to drop in and do his thing; He always wanted to travel light”. Enligt Adam Shatz var Don Cherry’s musik1 :

…buoyed by what Italo Calvino called “the secret of lightness”, the gift of the artist “who raises himself above the weight of the world”.
Cherry’s lightness inspired the musicians he met, but it has obscured the depth of his achievement, as if he were too celestial to leave a footprint in musical memory.

Vidare skriver Shatz att: “Don Cherry played the cornet or the “pocket trumpet” - a tiny horn made in Pakistan that he had picked up at a pawnshop”. Och enligt Shatz (s. 30) kallade trumpetaren “the ‘sheer freshness’ of the music he played ’now-ness’”. Shatz skriver vidare att Don Cherry var:

…an extraordinarily innovative figure, first as an apostle in Coleman’s free jazz movement, which liberated improvisation from the chord progressions of bebop; then as a leader of musical globalism - what later became known as world music.

Ornette Colemans tolkning:

    allowfullscreen>

‘Embraceable You’ from This is Our Music is probably the ultimate Rorschach test for Ornette’s fans and skeptics. I sympathize with anyone not being able to get next to it because I didn’t always like it either!

These days I no longer hear the form as constantly getting lost, but instead as a through-composed collective improvisation.
Ornette uses pure melody to shape his solo. Haden is right there, abstracting the tune’s changes and humbly serving Ornette’s broken-hearted smear. Blackwell’s mallets are perfect, especially if you can withhold judgement about the time warp during the first time he uses patterns on the toms.
The searing, Coleman-composed introduction may be better than the Gershwin tune. It’s a performance that requires compassion to be understood.
